Julie’s Bicycle is working closely with the sMeasure team at the Environmental Change Institute to support environmental management across the built environment of the cultural estate.
sMeasure is an online energy analysis tool that requires no prior knowledge and no kit - just meter readings! Using your weekly meter readings for electricity and gas, sMeasure provides a graph of your energy use and compares it with local weather conditions, to help you gain a better understanding of where and when your building is using the most energy so that you can prioritise how to reduce your energy impacts.
Over 100 music and theatre venues of all sizes are now signed up to sMeasure as a first step in getting to grips with their environmental impacts. Such a sector-wide approach for building energy management is unique. It demonstrates the leadership of the cultural sector in developing a deep response to climate change.
Signing up to sMeasure
SMEasure usually costs, but organisations working with Julie's Bicycle are given free access through the Julie's Bicycle community account.
Joining our community of cultural venues and businesses on sMeausre will enable you to:
• Track energy use and GHG emissions
• Assess accurately building energy performance
• Identify financial savings achieved and new opportunities
• Access a wealth of expert knowledge
• Interact with colleagues to share learning
• Support a efforts to identify improved building energy benchmarks

sMeasure and Industry Green
sMeasure fits neatly with Industry Green. The scientifically rigorous assessment process of Industry Green certification will enable your organisation to communicate with confidence the serious efforts it has taken in response to climate change.
We also recommend you use the Industry Green (IG) Tool alongside sMeasure as these tools together will enable you to systematically understand your organisations climate change impact. Whereas sMeasure only calculates carbon emissions from your building(s) energy use, the IG tool (for venues, offices, festivals and outdoor events and tours) will calculate your annual carbon footprint:
• Water use
• Waste to landfill
• Business travel
• Audience trave
From SMEasure you will be able to pull out your annual building energy use figures by fuel type to input into the IG tool.
