Green Theatre Network

Julie’s Bicycle facilitates the Green Theatre Network, which has grown out of the pioneering work of the Greening London Theatres Steering Group initiated by the GLA and incubated by Arcola.

The network exists as an online platform and also as a series of networking events and focus groups on sustainability within the theatre sector.

Aims of the Network

The network aims to support the UK theatre community to improve its environmental sustainability and reduce carbon emissions in line with the Mayor’s London plan targets of 60% by 2025. The network is a source of advice, inspiration and peer support for members to share and learn from best practice in environmental sustainability, as well as a forum to work together and develop solutions to theatre specific challenges.

Membership

Membership of the network is open to anyone working in the UK theatre industry. Current members include representatives from venues, touring companies, industry bodies, trade associations, suppliers and funders. If you interested or active in environmental sustainability/carbon reduction in theatre you can sign up to the Network's Ning site, and if you'd like to receive an invitation to future events please let us know.

How it works

1. Events

Network events happen 3-4 times a year.

At events members get the chance to network and hear about members’ case studies through presentations and panel discussions, and to learn from each other's experiences. We also run smaller focus groups about particular issues alongside the main events, such as set construction, employee engagement, and procurement.

2. Access to Julie’s Bicycle expertise and advice

We offer a whole range of online resources, guides and our carbon calculators, the IG Tools, on our website for free.

We will also offer a helpline as far as resources allow. We can’t promise to answer every question in depth but if we don’t know the answer ourselves we do usually know who does, so we can signpost and connect people.

3. Online networking and shared learning

Join the Green Theatre Network online at JuliesBicycle.ning.com.

4. Benchmarking

We will produce benchmarks and aim to release an annual report for London theatre on GHG emissions and progress towards targets based on data collected via our online IG Tools, our Industry Green certification, SMEasure, and engagement with theatres in the network.

Funding

We are grateful to Arts Council England, Arup and the Mayor of London for start up funding for the network.
