IG Tools

Free and easy-to-use carbon calculator tools for creative companies

The first step to environmental action is to understand your environmental impacts, and measurement of these impacts is the first step. We have developed a unique set of tools to measure the greenhouse gas emissions of your core activities on an annual or activity basis. The tools are environmental auditing tools that give you an overview of your performance against relevant benchmarks.

Who can use the IG tools?

The IG Tools have been tailored for music, performing arts, comedy and visual arts, but can be adapted for other cultural activities, and can be used by:

  • Festivals and outdoor events
  • Offices
  • Tours
  • Venues

The IG Tools are internationally applicable.

Please note that there might be some discrepancy in the final results as it is likely that conversion factors for electricity and transport might vary slightly from one world region to the next.

What are the benefits of using the IG tool?

The IG tool will:

  • accurately calculate your carbon emissions using the latest government guidelines
  • help set priorities and identify opportunities for emissions savings
  • benchmark your performance to against similar activities
  • prepare you for regulation requiring company carbon reporting
  • meet criteria for the Industry Green certification scheme
  • support a creative industry-wide response to climate change
What areas does the IG tool measure?

You will be asked to provide the following data:

  • Energy use
  • Water use
  • Waste generation
  • Audience travel
  • Business travel
  • Your innovations

In each tool clear explanations are given as to what information is required in each field. And if you have any questions do not hesitate to email or call us for help!

What type of feedback will I get?

In each tool you will be given total greenhouse gas emissions for the measured activity and a breakdown of the emissions by source (e.g. building energy, waste generation, water use, business travel and audience travel for a venue). Also, coming soon in the tools we will be giving you benchmarks of typical performance for that category of activity (e.g. a small theatre, large festival or UK arena tour etc.).

How are the results calculated?

The tools primarily use the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (Decc) / Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs' (Defra) most recent greenhouse gas (GHG) emission conversion factors for company reporting (2010) to calculate the total GHG emissions of the measured activity. Download a pdf of the conversion factors we use: UK conversion factors, International conversion factors.

In the case of audience travel for festivals and venues, if no raw data is available, we use default data based on our research in the field. Download a pdf of the audience travel defaults we use: Festivals, Venues.

How will our data be used?

Your data will be treated confidentially and will not be shared with any other party unless permission is directly sought and given. However the information captured through these tools will be anonymously aggregated to create a set of industry benchmarks. For example the per seat emissions benchmark for a theatre; the per ticket benchmark for a UK arena tour; or the per audience day for a large music festival. For the development of robust benchmarks we require as much data as possible so please use the IG tools to support these efforts. For more information please see our Privacy Policy.

Great, how do I get started?
  • First you will need to register and create an account - you only need to enter an email address and create a password to register.
  • Once you are signed in go to www.juliesbicycle.com/calculator and select the activity type you wish to measure (festival or outdoor event, office, tour or venue).
  • In your account you can store any number of IG Tool entires (e.g. multiple tours and multiple festivals etc.).
  • You don't need to complete an entry in one sitting. You save and update information in your account as you go along.
Are the IG tools only for Industry Green participants?

No. The IG Tools are standalone tools. However, completion of the IG tools is required for Industry Green participants and we hope all users of the IG tools will consider applying for Industry Green.

Other tools we recommend

We have a partnered with SMEasure - a tool for building energy monitoring developed by Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute. We recommend you use SMEasure alongside the IG Office or Venue Tool, as it will support ongoing energy management of your buildings throughout the year. It is free to use and requires no kit or prior knowledge. A single or multiple buildings can be monitored within an account.

SMEasure is being used by more than 80 theatres, which will also help improve building energy performance benchmarks.
