Production Resource Group (PRG)
One of the USA’s most well known lighting companies, PRG are also at the fore-front in the manufacture and design of eco-friendly lighting equipment for tours and live shows. Two lower energy products they supply and also manufacture are:
The Vari-Lite VLX Wash Luminaire, which is manufactured by Philips. Lighting designers are able to replicate the colour temperature of a tungsten or arc lamp source by using LED components. This reduces energy consumption and decreases the maintenance costs associated with tungsten and arc lighting. LED lifespan is up to 10,000 hours, much higher than older models.
And secondly, the Bad Boy Luminaire, a very bright automated light, significantly uses less power than its comparable products (products that provide the same output over all colours). The Bad Boy Luminaire fixture was developed in response to client demand to produce a bright fixture with great optics, and the fact that the product has green credentials assists the fixture to become one of the most well known in its field. The Bad Boy Luminaire has become very popular, and was recently used as the primary lighting fixture on U2’s 2009 world tour. Amongst their other ‘green’ technological siblings, the Bad Boy Luminaire has both the output and features to light a live show effectively, whilst it considers other fixtures less effective when it comes to the same output level, therefore requiring more fixtures to create the same effect. In terms of efficiency, the Bad Boy is up to 40% efficient with power usage, in comparison to 20% used by lighting fixtures of the same power output.
