Recorded music formats should be greener

48.5% of music fans would prefer to buy their CD’s in sustainable packaging rather than in the traditional plastic case.  These are the initial findings of the latest survey carried out by Buckinghamshire New University on behalf of the cross music industry initiative Julie’s Bicycle.

Music fans were asked “If given the choice between a CD packaged in a bio degradable card or a plastic case I would choose card even if it didn’t look as nice” 48.5% agreed with this and a further 22% were unsure in results that must be of interest to labels. Only 27% didn’t agree.

“Fans are more aware of the potential negative impact of recorded music concluded Teresa Moore of Buckinghamshire New University who carried out the research. “Particularly the manufacture of CDs and CD packaging, and hopefully the music industry can now move forwards and address these issues”.

Fans also felt that artists can have a real impact on people’s behaviour. The survey  found that 61% of those asked the question ”Can artists who write about climate change really make a difference to peoples behaviour?” responded positively with only 14% disagreeing.

Full details of the survey results will be available shortly

The survey took in nearly 1500 music fans from across Europe with 507 from the UK, nearly 600 from Finland and 330 from Holland and German.

In order to minimise the project’s carbon footprint and potential waste a large proportion of the surveys were completed online both in the UK and in Europe. This meant that the data collection process minimised the project’s carbon footprint and any potential waste. The survey was carried out by a small group of Buckinghamshire New University’s students and staff.
