Gore says action is needed - Now!
As news breaks that the Government of the Maldives are taking a fighteningly pragmatic approach to climate change by looking for a new home for the near 400,000 person nation because predicted rising sea levels will leave the 1200 island and coral atoll based state nearly totally under water by 2100, Al Gore has sent a message to President-elect Barak Obama saying that the US has the wherewithal, if it puts its mind to it, to move to 100% renewable energy in 10 years. The new leader of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, said that his people did not want to leave the Maldives but equally his pepole did not want to end up as ‘climate refugees living in tents for decades’ as predicted sea level rises of up to 59cm by 2100 (IPCC) will cause huge problems to islands which are mostly just 1.5m above the sea level and just 2.4 m at their highest point. Meanwhile Gore points to the successful US mission to put a ‘man on the moon’ - originally thought to be impossible - which was quite quickly and safely achieved by the US and hopes that the US can turn the same gung ho attitude to bear on moving the US to a carbon neutral economy.
