Music industry backs climate deal
Julie's Bicycle has gathered over 100 of the music industry's most senior, influential and forward-thinking leaders to call for an effective global climate governance framework at Copenhagen: you can read the full text of our statement and the list of signatories below. This week our chairman Tony Wadsworth spoke to the Act on Copenhagen team at DECC about why we support a global deal at Copenhagen and you can watch the video here.
To the 15th Conference of the Parties December 2009
The music industry, as represented by the signatories below, is deeply concerned that international cooperative action is nowhere near the scale of ambition required either to stabilise greenhouse gas emissions or to adapt to climate change impacts.
Like many others we are anxious that the 15th Conference of the Parties will produce an effective global climate governance framework. Agreement is needed on targets which reflect the depth of the problem, and outcomes should include:
· an effective global climate governance framework;
· consensus on scientifically informed targets which reflect the depth of the problem;
· targets are widened beyond the Kyoto signatories;
· realistic delivery timetables;
· financial mechanisms to stimulate extensive infrastructure investment in decarbonisation;
· an equitable global price for carbon;
· fair mechanisms and resources provided to involve all countries, particularly those suffering from the effects of climate change now, in both mitigation and adaptation.
The music industry is prepared to assume its own responsibilities and take immediate and concerted action. We are launching an Industry Green Spring, starting in January 2010 where signatories are taking responsibility for their carbon emissions; many of us are signing up to the Industry Green Framework which commits us to a 24 month programme of carbon reduction. These are first steps as we shift to a low carbon creative economy.
The music industry has global reach and can unleash imagination and passion like few other industries. We can help our political leaders bring about the global transformation required and therefore urge that the best interests of our planet lie at the heart of the Copenhagen negotiations.
