Partnerships

Arts Council England
As of 1st April 2012 it will be a funding requirement for all National Portfolio organisations (NPOs) and Renaissance Major Partner Museums (MPMs) to measure their environmental impacts and put in place environmental action plans. The aim is to reduce carbon emissions from, initially, energy and water, by March 2015, and Arts Council England will work in partnership with Julie’s Bicycle to help funded organisations to develop more environmentally sustainable practices.
This partnership represents a new model of working for Arts Council England: Julie's Bicycle will provide support and expertise directly to funded arts and cultural organisations via the IG Tools, training and resources, so that sustainable ways of working can be rapidly embedded across the sector bringing financial, as well as environmental, benefits.
More information for NPOs and MPMs here >
Previously in partnership with ACE, we developed several environmental resources for the UK arts sector, namely the Arts Energy Toolkit and Environmental Resources for the Arts.

Association of British Orchestras (ABO)
Following the publication of the Green Orchestras Guide in January 2010 and Moving Arts for Orchestras in June 2010, Julie’s Bicycle is working with the Association of British Orchestras to develop an Environmental Sustainability Charter for the orchestral sector, and a supporting suite of online resources, tools and case studies to encourage and promote good environmental practice.

Australia Council for the Arts
JB has been contracted by the Australia Council for the Arts to support a collaboration project between Australia Council and IETM – the international network for contemporary performing arts, based in Brussels – that is seeding international collaborations via artist-residency programmes, producer placements, inbound projects and a one-off commission. One of the underlying themes for the collaboration is climate change, and Julie’s Bicycle is mentoring 12 of the performing arts companies participating in the collaboration including the winners of a “climate commission”. Each project’s carbon impacts are being tracked using the Julie’s Bicycle IG tools, while they receive tailored recommendations for reduction. Broad recommendations for minimising the environmental impacts of future international activities will also be developed for Australia Council at the completion of the project. This follows a 3-week visit to Australia by JB Head of Research Catherine Bottrill.

Broadway Green Alliance
After a fascinating visit to learn more about BGA's work, Julie's Bicycle is developing a partnership with BGA on broadway in New York.

Environmental Change Institute, Oxford University
ECI are a long term partner for JB and have co-authored most of the research we produce, as well as sitting on our Industry Green Advisory Group, the body which scientifically verifies the certification programme.

Festivals Edinburgh
Julie's Bicycle is partnering with Festivals Edinburgh for the The Edinburgh Festivals Green Venue Initiative.
Edinburgh's Festivals are working together to try to understand their responsibility to the environment and do what they can do to minimise their impact and raise awareness of environmental issues. Venues and audience travel are the two most significant areas of impact that the Festivals have on the environment. In 2010 the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, along with the other major Edinburgh Festivals through their joint strategic body Festivals Edinburgh, launched a three year pilot programme to work with the city's venues to help them measure, monitor and mitigate the impact of their operations during Festival time.

IETM
In partnership with Australia Council for the Arts and IETM, we will be providing environmental support and consultancy for the winning commissions of their 2010-11 collaboration programme between Australia and Europe.

ISAN
ISAN is an independent group of producers, presenters, promoters and artists working in outdoor arts from the UK and Ireland. It develops the outdoor arts sector through networking, lobbying, information-sharing, training, research, and advocacy support and advice for members.
ISAN commissioned Julie's Bicycle to author the ISAN Environmental Sustainability Toolkit for Outdoor Arts, which was published in February 2012 and is available for online download here >

London Theatre Consortium
We are working on a project with a group of 12 London producing venues to improve the environmental performance of the individual venues over a three year period, and to facilitate peer learning and cross-consortium projects for a group of similar organisations tackling similar issues.
The venues involved are: Almeida, BAC, Bush, Donmar, Greenwich, Hampstead, Lyric Hammersmith, Soho, Royal Court, Theatre Royal Stratford East, Tricycle, and Young Vic.

Manchester Cultural Leaders Environmental Forum
Julie's Bicycle facilitates the Manchester Cultural Leaders Environmental Forum, a forum for Manchester-based cultural organisations across the creative industries to share sustainable best practice, receive bespoke training workshops and jointly procure green products and services. The Manchester Cultural Leaders’ Environmental Forum grew out of a desire to promote and share good environmental practice, and the recognition that good practice can be significantly enabled by working collaboratively. The Forum is funded by Renaissance North West and Arts Council England

NewcastleGateshead Cultural Venues (NGCV)
Julie's Bicycle is working with the NewcastleGateshead Cultural Venues, a voluntary partnership of 10 organisations, working together to share learning and information and maximise their sustainability, as well as their social, cultural and economic impact.
In the first instance Julie's Bicycle will carry out Industry Green certifications for the 10 venues, which are:
BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, International Centre for Life, Dance City, Live Theatre, Northern Stage, Seven Stories, Theatre Royal, The Sage Gateshead, Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums and Tyneside Cinema.

North Devon Biosphere Arts Community
Julie’s Bicycle is delivering a programme that will strengthen the North Devon Biosphere Arts Community’s ability to collectively track, improve and communicate its environmental impacts, including the special role the creative arts can play in the UK’s only UN designated biosphere, outlined below. The programme is supported by the North Devon Biosphere Foundation and Pete Yeo.
The North Devon Biosphere Arts Community includes the following organisations:
Appledore Arts ~ Beaford Arts ~ Broomhill Art Hotel ~ Burton Art Gallery & Museum ~ North Devon Theatres including the North Devon Festival ~ The Plough Arts Centre ~ Goldcoast Oceanfest

On the Move
On the Move (OTM) s a cultural mobility information network with more than 30 members in over 20 countries across Europe and beyond. Their mission is to encourage and facilitate cross-border mobility and cooperation, contributing to building up a vibrant and shared European cultural space that is strongly connected worldwide.
In June 2011 OTM comissioned Julie's Bicycle to write a Green Mobility Guide for performing arts companies and venues across Europe. The Guide is available for online download here >

The Theatres Trust
The Theatres Trust are sharing data gathered from their Ecovenues project to contribute towards our benchmarking project for UK theatres. We are also collaborating with them on their DEC Pool survey in order to gather information for our soon to be launched Green Database.

Theatrical Management Association (TMA)
In autumn 2010 we ran a Sustainable Touring workshop and will be continuing the series with a session on Sustainable Venues in autumn 2011.
