JB and the London Theatre Consortium launch new sustainability programme
The London Theatre Consortium has launched a new sustainability programme in partnership with Julie's Bicycle. At the launch event on 9 November 2010 held at BAC, CEOs and representatives of the twelve London-based producing theatres that make up the London Theatre Consortium heard speeches from David Micklem, Artistic Director of BAC, and Alison Tickell, Director of Julie's Bicycle. The launch breakfast was followed by an introductory workshop for 'green champions' which covered current challenges, top tips and guidance in tackling issues relating to sustainability and climate change, touching on everything from set recycling to lighting. It was the first in a series of workshops which will cover five key areas for sustainable development within the consortium: venues, production, touring, audiences and benchmarking.
The project aims to:
- improve the environmental sustainability of each of the individual theatres who will each reduce carbon emissions and save costs as a result of the project
- provide an opportunity for the theatres to work together collaboratively on cross-consortium projects that address key environmental challenges and which are beyond the capacity of a single organisation to achieve or deliver
- provide replicable learning and good practice for collaborative and sustainable practice in theatre
Commenting on the project, Sian Alexander, our Associate Director, Theatre said:
' This project is incredibly timely. Not only will each of the individual venues improve its environmental credentials and save costs, but by working together the group will be able to make a step change in sustainable theatre practice, enhance its resilience and share that learning with the wider sector.'
The theatres involved in the project are: The Almeida, Battersea Arts Centre, The Bush Theatre, Donmar Warehouse, Greenwich Theatre, Hampstead Theatre, Lyric Hammersmith, Royal Court Theatre, Soho Theatre, Theatre Royal Stratford East, Tricycle Theatre and the Young Vic.
