Green Festival Alliance
What is the Green Festival Alliance?
The Green Festival Alliance (GFA) is a group of promoters and suppliers catalysing sustainability in the festival sector. Launched in January 2012, the alliance is currently focussing on temporary sustainable power provision.
Founder members of the alliance are Julie’s Bicycle (Steering group secretariat), A Greener Festival, Bestival, Festival Republic, Shambala Festival, Kambe Events Ltd (Steering group chair), Association of Independent Festivals and Firefly Solar.
Why was it created?
Investing in renewable technologies now will help reduce climate change impacts in the future, including extreme weather events that are of increasing concern to the industry. Sustainable thinking can also deliver cost savings, and improve the festival experience, and align our events with an increasingly eco-aware audience.
This month the GFA released The Power Behind Festivals - a practical guide to sustainable temporary power provision at festivals. The guide demonstrates how, through joined-up thinking and by developing a culture of energy awareness, any festival can save money and carbon. In fact, we believe you can make fuel savings of at least 10% as a result of implementing the ideas in this guide.
The report is for anyone involved in planning or running festivals and outdoor events. It includes:
- Summary of the current situation and future directions
- Case studies & practical examples
- A guide to temporary power systems
- An in-depth glossary, and advice on the language of power
- Action lists, next steps & example role responsibilities
